Skateboards are made of 6-9 layers of pressed plywood

You can think of these boards like a homogenous sandwich of wood. Fittingly, these slices are known as “layers.” Rather than building a board from start to finish, the process is broken down into several parts, and you can begin with as many of these as you want, depending on your skill level and materials.

The build process itself isn’t complicated. The term itself is a shorted version of “skating board.” Start by cutting a deck shape, then add a few layers before turning it into something functional. If you’re using that idea as a jumping-off point, you have a number of options to make your board unique, including size, base material, and wheelbase.

As a side note, you’re likely to read about the deck as a “foundation,” but that’s generally for newcomers who don’t want to learn how to build a skateboard from scratch. As noted above, the skateboard deck is layered, and some of those layers aren’t even part of the foundation.

So, you’ve picked the deck of your dreams. You’ve gathered your supplies, and you’re ready to dig in. Before you put a single nail in anything, you’re going to have to come up with a plan. You’ll need to consult design guides, measure your supplies, and figure out the most efficient order to use. Getting a grip on the details now will save you a lot of time when you’re actually building.

The main element of a skateboard deck is the board. So, you’ll want to decide if you want a deck, or a board. There are a few reasons why some people prefer one over the other. If you’re feeling experimental or you’re looking for a challenge, you might want discover exactly what defines a skateboard deck and what defines a skateboard board. Either way, the process of creating a deck or a board is the same .

Using veneers

Intricate designs are commonly added to skateboard decks using veneers. Veneers are thin sheets of wood that are typically sandwiched together to form the layers of the deck. They are then glued to the pre-shaped bottom and top wood layer to make the deck. veneer is most often used in high-end decks. It is a more expensive option, but it is durable and creates a unique look. Skateboard decks made of veneers are normally more flexible and lightweight.

Although each manufacturer has its own formula, different veneer types include; pica, ebony, koa, maple, bamboo, ash, walnut, and mahogany. You can choose the type of veneer that you would like based on your taste, are particular aesthetic and budget.

The thickness of the veneer is also an important factor. Thicker veneers are more desirable since they are more durable. You can find ones that are as thin as two millimeters and as thick as five millimeters. While some skateboard builders prefer thinner veneers because they are lighter, others prefer thicker veneers because they are less likely to break and they feel better under your foot.

Skateboard deck glue

Once all the holes are drilled, you are ready to glue the skateboard deck together.

Apply glue to the ends of the boards and clamp them together hard, using C-clamps to hold them down. Wait for the glue to dry. Carefully remove the boards from the C-clamps. Smooth out the edges with sandpaper.

Drill holes in the deck for the trucks, skateboard wheels, and hardware.

Test out your skateboard. Heelflip, log, ollie, heelflip, nose manual, and penny, etc.

Leave the board to press for up to 8 hours before removing it

From the press. Make sure you remove the weight evenly from both sides on the rack. The board should feel flat and stiff.

Uncut Skateboard Decks are an affordable and easy way to build your own custom skateboard and for good reason. Most skateboard companies have a few skateboard deck shapes that they use over and over again to create dozens of different designs.

They release those designs under different names and charge hundreds of dollars for them, but if you know where to look, you can get the exact same deck with the same exact shape for a fraction of the price.

If you’re looking for a certain shape, like a classic old school deck, you’ll probably have to do some digging to find one. But if you’re just looking to build a budget-friendly custom deck, then Uncut Decks are an easy option.

Now for everyone still reading, here it is, the fun deck building part. There are many places to get the supplies, including skate shops and online. Also, there are different types of skateboard making supplies, including griptape (grip tape), wheels, bearings, trucks, and axles.

The seven foot two by three inch piece of plywood you got should already have the wheels holes cut into it. If not, move the piece of plywood to a table that is waist height. Then cut through the hole with the jigsaw (make sure to hold the plywood steady so it doesn’t move when sawing), making the hole just bigger than the wheels that you bought.

Take the piece of plywood with the wheels holes drilled into it and place it on the skateboard horizontally. Then measure three inches in on each side from the wheels on the board, and make pencil lines in the area so you know exactly where to drill. You can hold the plywood in place by using two or three clamps.
